8.4. BODY VOID + EYE FLYS

Body Void (Prostethic Records) originally formed in the spring of 2014 as Devoid with the aim to combine the most extreme elements of hardcore punk and doom metal. Since changing their name in 2016 with the release of their full-length debut, Ruins, they’ve continued to evolve and progress. In 2021 they signed to Prosthetic Records and released their third LP, Bury Me Beneath This Rotting Earth, incorporating power electronics and drone into their sound.

In 2023, they returned with their most caustic and unhinged work to date. On their fourth full-length Atrocity Machine, the trio turned further toward noise and industrial. Inspired by acts such as Wolf Eyes, Pharmakon, and Killing Joke they contorted their pulverizing style of doom to fully embody the nightmarish reality of a country seemingly built only to exploit and punish.

The band has remained more active than ever in recent years. They’ve maintained a consistent tour schedule since 2021, hitting the road with the likes of Primitive Man, Uniform, Portrayal of Guilt, Mortiferum, Jarhead Fertilizer, Spirit Possession, Elizabeth Color Wheel, and OvO, and appeared at such festivals as Roadburn, Oblivion Access, and Levitation. In 2023, the band added Jacob Lee (Elder Devil, Keeper, Hellish Form) to their live edition becoming a four piece.

Eye Flys (Thrill Jockey Records) are a quintessentially Philadelphian band whose aggressive brand of noise rock is leading a wave of bands that harken back to classic era AmRep noise rock. Their rage is palpable and their wit is biting. Hailing from a city with a rich history of labor activism, long associated with the hard working, the underdog, the everyman. The trio’s grounded nature, one of whom is an active trade union member, imbues their music with a distinctive fearlessness and honesty. Their acerbic wit swiftly whittles matters down to their element, often reveling in the perverse humor of our current state of being. Eye Flys are unsparingly heavy, driven by the colossal rhythm section of bassist Kevin Bernsten and drummer Patrick Forrest. Vocalist/guitarist Jake Smith delivers sharp humor with a healthy dose of venom and bile with each bestial growl while his dirty riffs roar at you. Recorded by Bernsten at his own Developing Nations studio (Full of Hell, Integrity, Jarhead Fertilizer) and J Robbins’ The Magpie Cage, the band’s self-titled album features artwork drawn by artist and drummer John Herndon (Tortoise), known for his singular drawings and his band’s iconic TNT cover.

Eye Flys wades deeper into the muck and mire of modern living to take an unflinching look at the horrors of late-stage capitalism and offer a caustic remedy for its ravages. Expanding on their bludgeoning debut Tub of Lard, Eye Flys is lean and aggressive, fast and unforgiving. “Trepanation Summer”’s ferocious riffs bore directly into the skull, mimicking the crude pressure release of the ancient surgical process of the same name, Smith crying to “release the pressure” from within a wall of feedback. “Sleep Forever” throws down a thrashing, infernal groove, demolishing all in its path as Smith’s craggy guitar figures rise like toxic smoke from the devastation. “Draining Pus” revels in septic sludge, while “Bananarchy Zoo” manages to strip things down to an even more lean and incisive realization of the trio’s punishing sonic palette, in an exploration of Smith’s love/hate relationship with his Florida roots.

A wall of rippling noise and distortion run as connecting threads through the album, the band’s acerbic humor and raw emotion capturing the perspective and the frustration of the hardworking everyman. The band grapples with the repercussions of coping strategies with healthy skepticism and an eye on the gallows. Eye Flys offers a reassuring reminder that you haven’t gone mad and you’re not alone – that weird ‘n’ heavy music is still here as a respite from the madness of modern living and an outlet for righteous rage.

5.4. GREEN LUNG / SPIRIT ADRIFT

A cult band in every sense of the word, Green Lung emerged from London’s heavy rock scene with self-released debut EP Free the Witch (2018). Drawing on a host of peculiarly British musical influences, from doomy hard rock to pastoral prog and psych to the Hammer Horror theatrics of the NWOBHM, the band have swiftly risen to the forefront of the UK metal scene.

Lyrically celebrating the folklore, myths and legends of Britain, they conjure the wild and witchy spirit of their forebears for a new generation.

Signed to Nuclear Blast, Green Lung have released two critically acclaimed albums, Woodland Rites (2019) and Black Harvest (2021), toured internationally with Clutch, and performed on festival stages from Roadburn to Download.

Their third album, This Heathen Land, was released on November 3rd, 2023.

22.11. HIPPIE DEATH CULT + OMEGA SUN

Hippie Death Cult‘s journey through shameless and triumphant artistic expression has led them to become a vibrant force in the realms of psychedelia and riff-heavy rock n’ roll. This journey has not been without its challenges, but the band has always managed to emerge stronger and more determined than ever. Throughout their formative years, the band underwent what proved to be a very significant evolution, transitioning from a 4-piece to a more cohesive and harmonious power trio. This lineup currently consists of guitarist and founder Eddie Brnabic, vocalist and bassist Laura Phillips, and drummer Harry Silvers.

In 2019, Hippie Death Cult caught the attention of Cursed Tongue Records, who signed them for the release of their highly anticipated album “111.” The record was met with widespread acclaim, solidifying their place in the music scene. Building on this success, the band made another significant move in 2021 by signing with Heavy Psych Sounds Records. This partnership resulted in the release of their album “Circle of Days” and a split release titled “Doom Sessions Vol.5” with label mates High Reeper. Both full-length albums soared to the very top of the Doom Charts as well as many “Album Of The Year” lists, further cementing their status as a rising force in the genre.

Beyond their studio work, Hippie Death Cult is renowned for their electrifying and passionate stage performances. Their captivating stage presence have taken them on tours across the United States, Canada, and Europe, where they have garnered a dedicated and growing fanbase.

Now, as they prepare to unleash their new album “Helichrysum” on October 20th, Hippie Death Cult is ready to take their music to even greater heights. This album marks a significant milestone as it features Laura Phillips on vocals for the first time, adding a new dimension and sense of originality to their sound. “Helichrysum” promises to be an unapologetically deep, heavy and groovy album that showcases the band’s artistic growth and musical prowess.

To support the release of “Helichrysum,” Hippie Death Cult has planned full-blown North American and European tours. Fans can expect an immersive and powerful live experience as the band brings their high-energy performances to stages across the globe. With their unwavering dedication to their craft and their ability to push boundaries, Hippie Death Cult is poised to leave an indelible mark on the music scene for years to come.

9.10. GRAILS + JAMES BLACKSHAW

Originally conceived as a casual side-project in 2000, Portland, Oregon’s Grails have patiently developed into a rather radical study in tension and meditation, inhabiting a netherworld where virtually all earthly and otherwordly sounds are equally explored to reflect the disparate influences of its members. After releasing their first two albums on the Neurosis imprint Neurot Recordings, Grails followed up with Black Tar Prophecies Vols. 1,2 &, 3 on Important Records before ultimately finding their home at Temporary Residence Ltd.

Anches En Maat is the first new album from Grails in over a half-decade – following the masterful Chalice Hymnal in 2017 – and their first album recorded with all members in the studio together since Doomsdayer’s Holiday in 2008. With every Grails album released since Doomsdayer’s Holiday being a sprawling double-album endeavor, Anches En Maat was conceived as a return to the comparatively efficient single LP runtime.

With that, Grails set out to craft the same sonically dense world that their longer albums showcased, while trading singular indulgences for live collaborative interplay. The core group of founding members Alex Hall and Emil Amos (Om, Holy Sons) joined Jesse Bates, Ilyas Ahmed, and AE Paterra (Zombi, Majeure) in Atlanta, GA to record Anches En Maat together – a novel event for a band who had become so accustomed to recording separately and then laboring in post-production for months or even years on end. An improbable blend of melted 1980s softcore and daytime soap opera soundtracks, cosmic minimalism, aching Westerns, melancholy electronic pulses, and massive soul-disco strings, Anches En Maat is one of Grails’ most ambitious albums of their 20+ year career.

Initially inspired by the guitarists of the 60’s Takoma label to teach himself fingerpicking, James Blackshaw writes long-form pieces primarily for solo 12-string guitar that are heavily influenced by minimalist composers and European classical music and which use drones, overtones and repeating patterns alongside a strong inclination for melody to create instrumental music that is both intelligent, hypnotic and emotionally charged.

“One of the best and most original instrumentalists in the new, acoustic renaissance.”

18.9. SUNN O))) + KALI MALONE

SUNN O))) Shoshin (初心) Duo:
SUNN O))) returns to the live aspect in its core, original raw form. Founders/guitarists Stephen O’Malley & Greg Anderson will perform as a duo immersed in profound valve amplification, spectral harmonics, distortion and volume. Pure and primaeval riffs of temporality, massively heavy structures of sound pressure. Witness a live experience of physical sound, fog and glacial maximalism like no other.

Sunn O)))’s musical style has been described as drone metal, doom metal, experimental metal, black metal, noise rock, and dark ambient.Sunn O))) experiments with a variety of styles and sounds.

The works of composer and sound artist Kali Malone implement specific tuning systems in minimalist structures for pipe organ, choir, chamber music ensembles, and electroacoustic formats. Malone’s compositions are rich with harmonic texture through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation in repetitive motions and extended durations, emitting distinct emotive, dynamic, and affective hues which bring forth a stunning depth of focus.

Kali Malone’s recently released albums The Sacrificial Code [2019], Living Torch [2022], and Does Spring Hide Its Joy [2023] quickly rose to international critical acclaim, the latter charting #4 on The Billboard classical crossover chart.

She has performed extensively, presenting her music at Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Philharmonie de Paris, Radio France, Rockefeller Chappel, Grace Cathedral, The Southbank Center, Bozar, Schauspielhaus, Unsound Festival, Musica Festival, Berlin Atonal, Moogfest, and Kanal Pompidou amongst many other museums, contemporary art spaces, concert halls, churches, DIY venues and festivals throughout Europe, North America, and Australia.

21.5. UNSANE + DESOLAT

New York City’s UNSANE assisted in pioneering a more aggressive, less studied version of noise rock, one that blended the scum/art industrial sturm und drang of Foetus, the Swans, Einsturzende Neubauten, and Sonic Youth with a decidedly more straightforward hardcore idiom. While developing the blueprint for noise bands to follow, UNSANE cut a remarkable swath through underground music, inspiring a devoted, cult-like following around the globe. As a power trio, UNSANE relied upon a hammering, power-press rhythm section, a searing Telecaster howl, and distorted vocals that resembled a chainsaw cutting a steel beam.

During 1992, UNSANE’s daunting schedule was cut devastatingly short by the untimely drug overdose of drummer Charles Ondras. Former Swans and Foetus drummer Vinnie Signorelli climbed aboard the swiftly moving train in the fall of 1992.

The following year found the band recording its first for Atlantic Records, Total Destruction, a menacing, dark collection of songs driven by Signorelli’s hypnotic drumming and Spencer’s man-pushed-to-the-edge vocals. More touring followed and Matador released the Peel Sessions disc almost concurrently with Total Destruction.

Shortly after, the trio made another label switch to Relapse Records and began constructing the ironically titled Occupational Hazard. While on a press tour in Europe only a month prior to the disc’s release, Spencer was brutally attacked by street thugs and left for dead on the streets of Vienna, Austria.

After more touring, and some introspection, they proceeded to issue Visqueenon Mike Patton’s Ipecac label. March 2012 saw the band’s Wreck full-length out on Alternative Tentacles, and 2017 saw them signed to Southern Lord for the release of Sterilize.

The Viennese band was founded in 2018 and fell into Corona Lockdown just after 3 concerts. Nevertheless they have managed to release 2 EPs since then. And now this album. The rough coordinates might be called Noise-Rock, Sludge, Hardcore, Crust & Death Metal, the social-cultural background is the DIY Anarcho-Punk scene. The album will be released on vinyl on 9th December 2022, it can be purchased from the band at live concerts or from the labels Bloodshed666 Records and Santa Diabla online. 11.5. THE GREAT GRAY FUNK + VAMPYRES

Being a vernacular term for long and foggy winters, it should come as no surprise that the band behind The Great Gray Funk seeks to capture that certain eeriness and darkness with its music. As the band emerged during times of pandemic-induced isolation in late fall of 2020, the name seemed doubly appropriate.

Over the next two years, the band made its first live appearances and recorded its debut album, to be released in 2023.

While carrying their influences on their sleeves, the band does not shy away from expanding their sonic horizon through constant experimentation. Doom-laden riffs, bittersweet melodies and in-your-face drumbeats are just as likely to be found alongside catchy hooks and intricate instrumentation, with the occasional cheeky guitar solo thrown in. Consequently, The Great Gray Funk’s music invites the audience to repeat listenings.
There is always something new to find and appreciate.

VAMPYRES offer heavy rock for the children of the night. The Sound of the group incorporates elements of psychedelic and kraut influences, that produce a hypnotic trip taking the audience on an uninterrupted journey through the whole set.

4.5. NEBULA + GREAT RIFT

Guitarist Eddie Glass and drummer Ruben Romano formed NEBULA in 1997 after breaking away from desert rock pioneers Fu Manchu, eventually recruiting bassist Mark Abshire. The power trio specializes in feedback-drenched heavy rock, incorporating liberal doses of Black Sabbath riffery, psychedelia, and space rock. The band released a number of EPs before moving onto full-length albums like 1999’s To the Center and 2001’s Charged. They’ve mainly distinguished themselves as a very hard-working live unit

NEBULA creates pure guitar-driven, conscious expanding rock for the 21st century. They are a culmination of their rock forbearers such as Jimi Hendrix, MC5, The Stooges and Mudhoney turned up a notch, taken to the next level and blasting through space. NEBULA spread their gospel through their music and what they are preaching will leave the congregation on the floor.

In 2017 the band decided to reissue three of their crucial early works via Heavy Psych Sounds Records: 1998’s Let it Burn, 1999’s To the Center and 2002’s Dos EPs, which includes the material originally released on 1999’s Sun Creature and a Nebula/Lowrider split.

2022 saw the release of Nebula´s 7th studio album „Transmissions From Mothership Earth”.

In 2019 the band started with a personal change on the drums, which allowed the guys to expand their creative possibilities considerably.

26.4. ROTOR + TRIPTONUS

Rotor are a stoner rock band from Berlin, Germany. Active since 1998, the band has had six albums of mostly instrumental music released and have toured all over Europe and parts of the U.S. Initially a trio, the band currently functions as a quartet.

Rotor began sometime in the middle of 1998 initially as a trio, with their first live performance on 19 December at Das Weite Theater in Berlin. From there the band would perform more frequent shows in the Berlin area. The band’s first ever show outside of Germany would be at the fifth edition of Roadburn Festival on 22 March at 013 in Tillburg in 2001.

Over 2 decades later, and several full length albums in in, Rotor will be released their newest album „Sieben“ in February 2023.

This trio from Berlin makes an infernal intensive noise between old Kyuss, older eccentric US-indie-rock and very, very old psychedelic rumble.
